Cardiff Students' Union Shop

I developed the Cardiff University Students' Shop as part of the in-house Ruby on Rails development team. Bringing experience from previous custom built e-commerce solutions, my role was to lead the development of the shop's user-interface and back-end programming. The shop needed to enable users to buy multiple different types of products from box office tickets to computers to t-shirts, whilst handling high levels of traffic. Simplicity and stability concerns were essential for the multi-million pound box office. The site was launched in time for Fresher's week in September.

Key features

  • Versatile content management system for managing multiple product types
  • On-site card processing using ActiveMerchant
  • Live ActiveResource integration with the central user data system for login and data retrieval
  • Intelligent processing of orders with multiple delivery methods and processing fees

This site needed to display Rob's extensive range of photography work in an interactive and engaging way. The challenge here was to do that using only HTML, CSS & jQuery, without any need for Flash.

Key features

  • Extensive use of jQuery for interactive features
  • Use of the latest CSS3 technologies
